Boston Students Learn about Potential Careers at Vinfen

Job-Shadowing-Day-at-BDH

Vinfen’s Brighton Day Habilitation (BDH) welcomed two high school students, Leslie and Randai, to learn more about the program on March 11 for Job Shadow Day. Job Shadow Day is a collaboration between the Boston Private Industry Council (PIC), Boston Public Schools, and participating organizations like Vinfen who provide the work site and the opportunity for job shadowing. The day gives Boston Public School students the chance to learn and about potential careers they may wish to pursue and that are within their own community. Students prepare before the actual Job Shadow Day with job readiness trainings with the Boston PIC. The event itself permits students to apply these learned skills in a professional work setting.

The two students were given a tour, an overview of the work done at BDH, and shadowed BDH’s interdisciplinary team. This team includes nurses, direct care staff, physical therapists, occupational therapists, applied behavioral analysts, and speech-language pathologists. The morning ended with a pizza lunch and a question and answer session with staff.

For the past four years, Vinfen has participated in Job Shadow Day. Students have come to BDH to learn more about a variety of careers including nursing, direct care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, applied behavioral analysis, and speech-language pathology.

BDH Program Director Doreen Hiltz says, “the event gives students a chance to experience first-hand the types of important services that Vinfen provides to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They are able to see our interdisciplinary team work collaboratively with our direct care staff to help support the people we serve achieve their personal goals and maximize their potential to be as independent in their lives as much as they possibly can be. The students are eager to learn, ask great questions, and leave our program more enlightened about potential future job opportunities. Each year we enjoy the partnership and look forward to the next one.”
