Vinfen CT held their 5th Annual Celebration of Families on Tuesday, May 30 at the Pond House at Elizabeth Park in Hartford, CT.
CT Family Advisory Council member Lisa Ellis opened the event by providing welcoming remarks and introducing Master of Ceremonies and Emmy Award Winning Sportscaster John Holt. Vinfen President and CEO Bruce Bird and Family Advisory Council Members Linda and Bill Lamy also welcomed guests. Following their remarks, Connecticut Department of Developmental Services Commissioner Jordan Scheff also spoke at the event, followed by artists, advocates, and athletes Terrance Henderson and Angel Valdes.
Guests were treated to a keynote address by Dave Stevens. Dave was born without legs. In those years before adaptive sports, Stevens played able bodied sports and became a pioneer in his home state of Arizona. After high school, Stevens was awarded an athletic scholarship to Augsburg College in Minnesota, where he became the only legless player in college football history, eventually leading to a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys. Off the field, Dave enjoyed 30+ years in sports broadcasting, with duties ranging from reporter, to video editor, to producer. He now spends much of his time as a board member for the Wounded Warrior Amputee Team.
After the keynote, guests enjoyed a buffet dinner before the award ceremony, where Vinfen CT Job Coach Sherena Lumpkin received an Employee Award and Miss Lisa King was honored with a Family & Community Partnership Award.
