Vinfen President and CEO Bruce Bird was recently interviewed by OPEN MINDS. Since 1987, OPEN MINDS has monitored and tracked trends, data, marketing developments, and stakeholders in the health and human services industry. In his interview entitled Care Coordination In The Community – An Interview With Bruce Bird, Ph.D. Of Vinfen, Bruce discussed the upcoming major shifts in how MassHealth, Massachusetts’ Medicaid, will be organized and how MassHealth will be delivering care for people with disabilities and how Vinfen and its partners are planning to provide and ensure services and care to the people we serve with these new changes.
Bruce discusses the big changes to MassHealth, resulting in Vinfen forming a new organization with a principle partner, Bay Cove Human Services, and five other organizations. MassHealth is transferring people who receive their services to receive care at Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). These ACOs are made up of hospitals and manage care organizations. These ACOs will be in charge of providing care for people with significant behavioral health needs and/or disabilities. They will be supported by Certified Community Partners (CP), which will provide behavior health care and long-term services and support (LTSS).
“In August we were, with other community based organizations as partners, awarded opportunities to contract with MassHealth (Mass Medicaid) to form Certified Community Partner (CP) organizations to provide care coordination services to clients with Behavioral Health (mental health/substance use disorders) and LTSS (intellectual and developmental disabilities, elderly, autistic, acquired brain injury, and physical disability) populations,” states Bruce.
Vinfen is no stranger with providing coordinated, integrated care to people with complex needs. “For about three years we have successfully operated a health home for individuals with psychiatric conditions and complex medical problems for the under-64 dual Medicare/Medicaid population, under the ‘One Care’ Mass funding program,” states Bruce. “This program is growing to serve about 400 clients this year. That experience will be the basis for our care coordination model.”
