Vinfen’s Day Programs Complete “Rock Your Socks” Competition for World Down Syndrome Day

In honor of World Down Syndrome Day, Vinfen’s Developmental Services Day Programs participated in a “Rock Your Socks” team-building activity on March 21.

“Rock Your Socks” was designed as an awareness campaign that encouraged people to wear their brightest, most colorful socks to show support for those with Down syndrome.  It has now become an internationally recognized movement.  March 21st, or 3/21, was chosen as World Down Syndrome Day because Down syndrome occurs when someone has 3 copies of the 21st chromosome.

Vinfen Program Specialist Kerry Sullivan challenged the Day Program Staff in the South Shore and Boston area to wear their most colorful, spunky socks in celebration of people with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. “I asked them to do this to celebrate the folks we serve, as well as each other, and the ways that we all make the world brighter,” Kerry said. “These types of competitions give staff the chance to work together to achieve a goal; and bringing staff together is one of our priorities.”

A panel of Vinfen judges, including members of our Quality Department, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Division, and Assistant Clinical Directors, selected the team with the best participation and funkiest socks to win a free lunch for all their program staff. Seven programs participated in the “Rock Your Socks” challenge, but entries were so creative that the judges decided to award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes.

Brighton Day Habilitation won first place, earning a catered lunch for all the program staff. In second place was South Shore Day Habilitation, and the Employment Training Center won 3rd. SSDH and the ETC each won a breakfast of coffee, donuts, and bagels for their staff.

Plans are underway to make “Rock Your Socks” an annual competition. “I know that [Program Director] Doreen Hiltz at BDH is already strategizing for next year! They want to hold on to their title,” Kerry said. There are also plans to launch a scavenger hunt competition for Day Habilitation staff at Vinfen.
