Vinfen’s Cambridge Somerville program hosted their 9th Annual Community Celebration on November 16 with a sports-themed party at Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA. Friends, family, staff, and persons served spent the evening eating a delicious dinner of rolls, chicken wings, tater tots, vegetables and dips, and macaroni and cheese. Attendees recited poetry, shared their vocal talents, performed comedy, participated in games, and danced the night away.
Master of Ceremonies Richard Sheingold, a person served by Vinfen, engaged guests with his witty humor and personable demeanor. Vinfen Vice Present of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Tim Wing made introductions and Vinfen President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Bird welcomed everyone to the celebration.
Jay Hoffman, a person served by Vinfen, has been attending this event for years. “I want to hear people and not be so isolated,” Jay shared. Another person served, Summer Bruce, remarked that the event has a wonderful atmosphere, positive people, and good food. “I want to be around positive people,” Summer said.
Among peers Jay and Summer, Linda Crowder, a person served, took to the stage twice to share her beautiful voice with the audience. Linda commented,“In life you go through a lot of trials and tribulations but at the end of it you begin to see what your destiny is.” The room was full of personal triumphs as people celebrated their recovery.
Following dinner, guests were treated to a prize drawing of gift cards from businesses in the community. Some local Cambridge businesses who donated included S&S Deli and Restaurant, Souper Roll-Up Cafe, and Alfredo’s Italian Kitchen. Afterward, guests were invited to dance with DJ services and entertainment provided by DJ Tommy.
A special thanks to the people served by programs in the Cambridge Somerville area, their families, and staff from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and for Rita’s Catering who provided the meal. In addition, a thanks to Vinfen staff members who were floor managers and servers, to individuals who helped with set-up and clean-up and provided transportation, and to those who were on Banquet Committees.
