An Endearing Sense of Support at the Spring Fling

Vinfen’s Friends of Metro Boston hosted their Spring Fling on May 2 at Florian Hall in Boston, MA. The celebration welcomed the arrival of Spring with a delicious roast beef lunch, rock and roll from the Linehan Brothers, and a chance for attendees to dance, mingle, and see both new and familiar faces.

Eddie, a member at Vinfen’s Webster House said he tries to attend the event every year. “I love coming to these events!” The people around me are like family to me,” he shared. Eddie sat at a table with fellow Webster House members alongside Vinfen Clubhouse Counselor Bonnie Hernandez. The table was full of enjoyment in a room beaming with laughter and engaging conversations.

Sitting across from Eddie was D’ayshea, another Webster House member. This was her second time attending the Spring Fling and she truly enjoyed the sense of community that is felt throughout the room. “I get to see the old people and then the new people, so it is a big atmosphere of sharing knowledge, dancing, and socializing all together,” D’ayshea explained. Receiving services has really had a positive impact on her and her life. “I experienced having nothing to now having something. It makes me cry sometimes because I came from nothing,” she voiced.

Normary, another person Vinfen serves, chimed in on how much fun she was having at the event. “I like to meet different people!” she exclaimed. She also feels supported by her community, and expressed how thankful she was for her fellow Clubhouse members who love her for who she is.

Everyone danced and had a blast. This event could not have been possible without Massachusetts Department of Mental Health‘s Cindy St. Pierre and Kenny Mack, volunteers like Billy Higgins, and Vinfen staff including Services Specialist Pat Pesa and Program Director of Friends of Metro Boston Cameron Zirpolo. Cameron’s favorite aspect of the Spring Fling is seeing such genuine people all come together in the same room. A true sense of support is deeply felt every year at the event.
