Familiar Faces, Friendship, and Freedom at Family Fun Day

Every year, the Vinfen Family Support Center has a presence at the Greater Boston Family Support Center’s Family Fun Day. This year, the event was on June 1 at the Pope John Paul II Park in Dorchester, MA.

Vinfen’s Family Support Center Program Director Sethany Griffin and Vinfen Director of Service Joe Dorsey were joined with volunteers at the event and brought their family along to enjoy. 400 people attended and appreciated the sunshine filled day. Guests enjoyed a clown and magic show, a dance of a lion with accompanying drummers, a bubble station, prizes, frisbee, and new this year, a drum circle. “Everyone got a chance to drum and dance, and it really seemed to make everyone happy!” Sethany shared.

The Greater Boston event is held annually and provides families in the community an opportunity to get some fresh air and meet one another. “Speaking from experience, having a child with special needs can feel very lonely and isolating, so an event like this where siblings can meet other siblings, parents can meet other parents, individuals can meet other individuals, and everyone can interact together in a low pressure, fun, and non-judgmental atmosphere, is really a lifesaver!” Sethany voiced.

Sethany thinks Family Fun Day is a wonderful chance to network with people, which could lead to a blossoming friendship where someone ‘gets it’ and can be a supportive presence in your life. “That’s what it’s all about, celebrating the strength and unity in the special needs community, and letting people know they are not alone.” One family shared their experience and why they attend Family Fun Day. “Family Fun Day was a great event for us to attend this year! It’s extremely important for us to be apart of the special needs community where my son’s (and others) challenges and progress are respected.”

Other organizations joined Vinfen to provide resources for the community. These agencies included Bay Cove Human Services’ Family Support Center who attended with Dennis the pug, The Dimock Center Family Support Center, Haitian-American Public Health Initiatives’ (HAPHI) Family Support Center, Advocates’ Project Able, Work Inc. Family Support Center, Massachusetts Department of Developmental Disabilities and more.
