Portraiture and Personalities at Gateway Arts

Gateway Arts held an Artists’ Reception in celebration of the opening of their summer exhibit, The Faces of Gateway, this past August. The event was both lively and lovely, and proved to be a wonderful gathering among the community and artists.

The Faces of Gateway was a themed group exhibition open from July to the end of August that explored portraiture. This exhibition offered insight into the many people and personalities that make up the community of artists at Gateway, particularly the portraits that tell stories of both artist and subject alike.

Art Director at Gateway Arts Stephen DeFronzo really enjoyed the exhibit. He shared, “While some of Gateway’s artists make portraiture a mainstay of their artistic practice, many do not. Seeing their response to this year’s themed exhibition I realize just how thoughtful and creative our artists are. Walking through the gallery, I am struck by how the attitude and general attributes of the subjects are captured in the faces peering out from the sixty 16 x 12-inch canvases.”

At the reception, artists had the opportunity to speak about their work, subjects, and artistic choices, and engage with one another and members of the Brookline Village community in celebration of their work. This reception was also a unique opportunity for members of the community to interact with Gateway artists who are often unable to attend events which occur outside of Gateway’s program hours.

Everyone who attended really enjoyed themselves. “It was our first afternoon reception, which created a unique experience for attendees as studios were still in session, and more artists were able to participate in showcasing their work.  It’s often difficult for some artists to attend evening receptions for transportation reasons, so for some artists it was their first time attending an opening reception!” explained Gateway Arts Marketing Specialist Justine Portmann Katz. “It was a very dynamic event with great attendance and energy,” she added.

As the summer concludes and the breeze conveys notes of fall, Gateway Arts is in full swing for their fall show, TechnoGateway. TechnoGateway is a group exhibition of technology based and inspired artworks by artists working in the Gateway studios. The exhibit will be open from September 10 – November 9.
