Friends of Metro Boston
The Friends of Metro Boston’s mission is to enrich the lives of young people recovering from psychiatric conditions.
Friends of Metro Boston provides opportunities for young adults with psychiatric conditions to participate in activities in the community with young adults who do not have psychiatric conditions. We work with community members and organizations to bring young adults together. Relationships are formed in their own community so people feel included and integrated. These shared memories and friendships help to build community and dispel prejudice and discrimination often faced by those with psychiatric conditions. This Vinfen program is funded by a contract with the Department of Mental Health (DMH).
Activities we offer
We provide sports activities with opportunities to build conflict mediation and resolution skills, recreational activities, social opportunities, community interaction, and shared experiences and friendships.
- Painting and Lawn Care programs – Short-term work and team building programs for young adults who are receiving DMH services and are local community members
- Annual Talent Show – An event that showcases and celebrates the talent of the people receiving DMH services
- Picnics, cookouts, and holiday parties
- Recreational activities such as basketball, bowling, and softball games
- Community Events like the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner
These programs have proved successful in lighting a pathway for many young adults, providing them with encouragement and opportunity that promotes independence, confidence, and hope. This program also builds comradeship through teamwork and helps eradicate the isolation that many people with psychiatric challenges face in their daily lives. By having community members and volunteers work and participate side-by-side with people who receive services by DMH, greater understanding and acceptance for all within the community is promoted.
Our vision is to continue to develop and form a working relationship with groups throughout Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Chelsea, Winthrop, and Revere.
We are always looking for young adults to join our Painting and Lawn Care programs. Our employees provide community service as well as learn responsibility, time management, and working cooperatively within a team. This is a great opportunity for any young adult wanting to build their job skills needed for any career.
If you would like to join one of these programs, please contact Friends of Metro Boston Program Director Cameron Zirpolo at 617-626-8978 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
